Home-Field Advantage: Early Results

Agoura — ranked just #340 on MaxPreps — scored a big win, beating Westlake 21-20 for what I think is the first time this century … Westlake’s coach is fumbling through the season, and, sadly, he has divided the team. It started his first year when he picked the wrong QB and played the wrong players … Thousand Oaks beat Westlake for T.O.’s first win, the first in two years, while the coach lined up on the wrong side of the field … It had to be a sign …

His second year, he picked the wrong QB again, and now, in year three, he’s having another QB controversy … He must love the headaches and criticism. To injure his chances further, he started off by not having a single senior captain to lead the team. That means all the junior captains from last year were overlooked … Looks like we have Daddy Ball at Westlake High School. It gets worse off the field. After the loss at Agoura, there was a fight in the Westlake locker room. Again, the problem is not the boy; it is the coach! Sad to say, Westlake’s football season is over, and it is only week 2 … It’s going to be a long season in Warrior-land …  At least they beat one of the worst teams in California (Taft), 59-13, a game that should never have been scheduled! Is it too soon to fire the coach? Should have done it last year …

Oaks Christian had a tough 30-14 loss against MaxPreps #3 ranked Sierra Canyon. At least they played the best rather than going after bad teams so they could get an easy win. That is the mark of a great program … Proud of Oaks Christian … Then they beat Chaminade, 55-28. To be the best, you have to play the best. Funny how The Acorn picked Chaminade over Oaks Christian in their pigskin preview … Not only did they get it wrong, but it was funny that the ranking was placed right by an advertisement for Chaminade school …

Let’s take note: Sierra Canyon is ranked #3 and played Oaks Christian, which is ranked #16 … but they don’t play the two teams ranked above them (#1 Mater Dei and #2 St. John Bosco). As I say time and again, I’m disappointed in the coaches’ poor scheduling abilities. Why wouldn’t Sierra Canyon schedule the top teams? The answer seems to be they don’t want to lose or compete … Let’s see if CIF schedules Sierra Canyon in the D1 bracket for playoffs or puts them in D2 so they can have a run … like they do every year …

St. Bonaventure beat Alemany 40-16 in its opener, then got beat by Pacifica 24-13 … Pacifica … The loss surprised me, but it makes more sense now that the QB controversy at Pacifica is gone (he transferred to Westlake; as I said, Westlake’s coach loves a good QB controversy, and this is three years in a row he can’t figure out who is the better player). Now the better QB is playing for Pacifica … I, for one, would like to see Pacifica play Newbury Park. That would be a good game … Meanwhile, Pacifica is going through the Marmonte league like a warm knife through butter, beating Simi, 28-11, and St. Bonaventure, 24-13.

Camarillo, which is moving into the Marmonte league next year, starts this season off 0-2, getting beat by Ventura 35-7 in the season opener. Then Rio Mesa beat them, 48-35 … Camarillo is not taking advantage of their easy schedule … That really surprised me. I thought they would be one of the top teams to go after Newbury Park in the final game …But, hey, the season is just starting, so let’s see if they can get on track …

To nobody’s surprise, Newbury Park beat Golden Valley in their season opener, 59-49, in a record-scoring game … The problem I see for N.P. is, where is their defense? They have a solid offense, but defense wins championships. N.P. is still my top pick for the Canyon League. Their offense is just too good … Thousand Oaks may be the number 2 team in the league. Last Friday, they beat Ventura, 17-0, and in the opener, Ventura routed Camarillo 35-7 … Thousand Oaks plays dysfunctional Westlake this week … should be an easy win for T.O., though not because of the players. Westlake simply will be out-coached again …

Simi lost in their season opener to Pacifica, 28-11, then smacked Palmdale, 55-0, in a game that shouldn’t have been scheduled. The team is ranked #822 in MaxPreps. That’s hard to do … Jim Benkert, you know better, scheduling a team worse than Taft! Now you get to play #457-ranked Royal down the street, another easy game, but at least this one is a rivalry … I am rooting for the underdog, hoping it’ll be a competitive game, but knowing that’s not going to happen. The kids all know each other. Simi will go on a winning streak until they play St. Bonaventure in a league game on October 12 … Their second test and a cake schedule letdown … Simi will lose their last three games … Crazy. Whatever happened to competing in football instead of picking teams to smack? Once more, CIF is creating this as they don’t go by strength of schedule but let the coaches pick teams to get a win. Competing builds character, so let’s get back to it … See you next week on the sidelines …

  1. You once again show just how small and pathetic you are with another baseless attack on someone who is actually making a difference. You’re just another washed up self described “athlete” who’s own ego and narcissism are simply more important than his own family. I feel for your family who has continually been subjected to you. One of the best days in the Westlake High School Football Program is when your last child graduated from the school. You were and continue to be the worst part of the Enderle family and exemplify what is wrong with youth sports and our discourse today. Do our community a favor and shut up for once. People don’t care what you say and they shouldn’t.

    • A coward is a person who WILL NOT put their name behind a rude and baseless comment when they try to insult someone’s integrity with ZERO facts!! Please tell me how this coach is making a difference. HE GOT FIRED!! And to get fired mid-season, he had to do something really bad!
