Home-field Advantage: Season Ends on a Win and a Prayer

Congratulations to Westlake for landing in the top tier of regional lacrosse rankings. Westlake (11-3) is ranked #8 in the 2023 California Southern CIF, and nearby Agoura (10-4) is ranked a respectable #15 … Both teams dominate the Marmonte League … Every team they play eventually starts running the clock, meaning there are no stop times at all during each quarter, regardless of whistles. This is done to stop the massacre of a lopsided game, ending it quickly

“My guess is St. Margaret wins it all, but with lacrosse, it comes down to coaching, and both Foothill and Loyola have the best coaches.”

This has been going on for years, prompting me to say: CIF, we want better games! With the league being so poorly matched, Westlake, for the second year in a row, has to take to the road to find competition … For example, the team just got back from Sacramento, where they played two top teams, winning one game and losing the other … and no team ran the clock. Why doesn’t CIF seek out competition for all the leagues? You know, make the games more competitive? Isn’t that why we have CIF?

Up next is the lacrosse playoff tournament … My guess is St. Margaret wins it all, but with lacrosse, it comes down to coaching, and both Foothill and Loyola have the best coaches … Don’t miss the tournament if you’re a fan …

The Marmonte League Championship game takes place on April 24 at Westlake, just after press time … The defending Marmonte league champions, Agoura High School, go to Westlake to defend their title. Westlake won the first game this year vs. Agoura, and if they sweep Agoura, they become Marmonte League Champions. I’m looking forward to that game …

Let’s end on an even higher note. At the end of the Westlake vs. Oaks Christian rivalry game, which Westlake won easily, 20-4, players from both teams gathered for a time of impromptu prayer … Nobody forced them as they stood arm-in-arm as one, praying to God. Makes me think there is hope for our youth … God bless both teams.

Local professional Frank Enderle played two years of football at Notre Dame High School, one of the top programs with the best coaches, then played for two years at Calabasas High School. He has a lifetime of sports experience, including coaching his own sons in baseball, football, lacrosse and basketball and serving in their booster programs.

  1. CIF Put #3 ranked St Margerets vs #2 Foothill in the first round… (Foothill won it all in S. Sec D1)
St. Margarets was winning by 4 in the 4th…. and Foothill came back and won in OT… Best game of the playoffs… What was CIF thinking??
