MONARCH DAY OF ACTION: NATIVE PLANT RESTORATION AT YERBA MANSA MEADOW

SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2022

9:00 AM 12 NOON

Join us for a hands-on Monarch Day of Action where we’ll plant narrowleaf milkweed and pollinator plants perfect for our butterfly friends!

Join us for a fun and safe Monarch Day of Action restoring our unique Yerba Mansa meadow in Newbury Park. The meadow is home to a population of the locally rare native plant Yerba Mansa along with milkweed visited by monarch butterflies and various other native plants used by dozens of local birds, insects and other wildlife.

Work will consist of planting hundreds of live plants grown from locally collected seed along with mulching, watering and weeding the planting site. This activity is appropriate for ages 5 and up. Due to the pandemic, we will be limiting this volunteer activity to a 3-hour morning time slot. Please pre-register to secure a volunteer slot.

Please bring water, sunscreen and a sun hat. Wear hiking attire and closed-toe shoes. Pants and long-sleeved shirts are recommended. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Families are welcome at Channel Islands Maritime Museum!

CIMM features beautiful and historical maritime artworks and models, but it also has several fun activities for families to share together during their visit. Learn about whales, the Port of Hueneme, the Chumash people, and early explorers. Ask for the museum’s kid’s activities packet when you arrive for your visit.

(We ask that there be at least one supervising adult for every four children under the age of 18.)

DATES: The museum is open Thursdays through Mondays (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). The Coast Guard Art exhibit is open now through March 25, 2022.

HOURS: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

CHANNEL ISLANDS HARBOR

2022 ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE WHALES

SUNDAY, MARCH 27, 2022

10 A.M. TO 2 P.M.

Join in the fun as we celebrate the amazing whales who migrate through our local waters!

Visitors who attend the 23rd Annual Celebration of the Whales Festival at the Channel Islands Harbor will be treated to family-friendly activities, chalk art, and prizes for children.

The event is being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. Activities will be held at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, the Channel Islands Harbor Farmers Market, and a “Gray Whale Migration Trail” along the marina path that connects the two activity centers.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum:

The Maritime Museum will host the Celebration of Whales. At the Maritime Museum, there will be contests, family activities, arts & crafts, and more. A number of organizations will also have booths set up so attendees can learn about marine-themed topics.

Channel Islands Farmers Market:

The Farmers Market will feature an arts & crafts market, children’s activities, whale facts, and educational booths.

Migration Trail:

Between the Maritime Museum and the Farmers Market, a .20-mile migration trail will feature chalk art, children’s activities, and art for sale.

The Celebration of Whales Festival is a collaborative event among Harbor lessees, businesses, and the Harbor Department that celebrates the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale.

VENTURA BOTANICAL GARDENS

OPEN TUESDAYS THROUGH SUNDAYS

HOURS: 9:00 AM TO 5:00 PM

See and smell some of the rarest plants in the world—including one that gives off the aroma of hot maple syrup—at the Ventura Botanical Gardens.

Located just blocks away and walking distance from the welcoming shops and restaurants of Downtown Ventura, the gardens are filled with beautiful flora and fauna and offer unbelievable views of the nearby Channel Islands and Santa Monica Mountains.

Stroll through the grounds and stop to smell the Chilean Escallonia illinita bush (that’s the maple syrup plant) and countless other species from Mediterranean climate zones around the world. The gardens are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
